Brook Trout

Magical Catch
Salvelinus fontinalis. Brook Trout, also known as speckled trout is a spectacularly coloured member of the char family. Brookies can only exist in habitat that meets its strict requirements for water quality and temperature. They can be found in both streams/rivers and lakes. Wild speckled trout are aggressive feeders on aquatic insects, leeches, minnows/baitfish and crustaceans make up the majority of the brookies diet. Their menu makes them a perfect target for fly fishing.
Quebec and Ontario have the best Brook Trout fishing in the World.
The World Record Brook Trout (14.5 lbs / 6.6kg) was caught here.
Fishing for Brook Trout
Catching a brook trout can be a magical experience, there is no fish as beautiful as a brook trout, and they look like they belong out there in the depths of the wilderness. Brookies will take a dry fly, nymph or a streamer, as well as a selection of lures (if you spin fish). They put up a great fight, and make beautiful pictures (the colours!). They will range from 2 to 5 pounds (1kg - 2.5kg) but occasional trophies will be there too, waiting for the more skillful anglers to catch them.
